Nova was the very first cheetah Kim hand reared from small and by starting the non profit to look after everyone at the project in his name, we are making sure he will never be forgotten.
Novas legacy is dedicated to protect the cheetahs as a species.
Cheetahs and their care is its main purpose, next to this it also assist in the care for any of the other species taken in at the centre.
Nova’s Legacy was funded to support Feracare wildlife centre, to assist the centre by taking over the care for the cheetahs and other animals joining the project.
Feracare Wildlife Centre was a little seed that started growing when Kim Hiltrop was a young girl. Kim had a passion for animals from the start and when the time was right she decided to move from Belgium to South Africa to pursue her dream. Kim spent a number of years gaining experience with various cat species and wildlife until the opportunity arose to take over Ann van Dyk’s life work, her private cheetah farm in the Waterberg area, there was not a moment of doubt.
Nova’s Legacy was funded to support Feracare wildlife centre, to assist the centre by taking over the care for the cheetahs and other animals joining the project.
Nova was born with his umbilical cord around his back leg and lived his life on 3 legs. He adapted, managed to walk and run and had an amazing spirit to tackle anything life threw at him.
His memory will help us to look after everyone at the project. They are his legacy to us and we must make sure they have a fighting chance for survival
Born in ’84, immediately after finishing her studies as a vet nurse, she moved to South Africa. Here begins a path of working with animals and wildlife in specific. Kim started working with birds, then moved over to small cat species and eventually settle on big cats.
Nova was the very first cheetah cub I hand reared. He thought me the beauty in cheetahs, the incredibly bond they can form with their carers and all the problems they face as a species.
Nova and I spent nearly 11 years together, a time where Nova pushed me to fight for the cheetahs survival.
Nova’s legacy will continue to fight for the species through captive breeding with the aim to give cheetahs a fighting chance in a world where they are running out of space.
